The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF). It comprises of three branches: the Singapore Army, the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
Defence Policy
Deterrence and diplomacy have been the defence policy, which is known as the 'poison shrimp' strategy.
DETERRENCE
'Poison Shrimp' theory. This defence policy positions Singapore like a poisonous prawn. Though small and not mighty looking, it can be fatal if consumed. Thus, a bigger nation might attack or even conquer Singapore, BUT the consequences, aftermath and price to pay is not worth the try. The logic is....... IF I perish U die together with ME.
DIPLOMACY
The SAF has developed extensive links with armed forces from other countries. It also conducts exercises or joint training programmes with foreign armed forces, like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei. It aslo conducts peace-keeping operations in East Timor and the Persian Gulf and disaster relief in the Indian Ocean earthquake-tsunami of 2004.
DOCTRINES & CAPABILITIES
The Singapore Army focuses on leveraging technology and weapon systems as "force-multipliers". It has of some of the most advanced military hardware, and sometimes is the only operator of certain military hardware in the South-East Asia region. The Singapore Army is also capable of amphibious and sustained operations with its highly capable logistics force.
Singapore practises conscription. Just like Gollevainen( from Finalnd), who has done his service in Finland as a Artillery man, I too have done my service term in Singapore. I'm a Guardsmen, which is a type of heliborne, quick reaction infantryman. In Singapore, all 18 above, male, are enlisted for a compulsary 2 yrs military service. They receive 3mths basic training, learning fieldcrafts, drills and rifle handling. Later he may be posted to military academy to be trained as NCOs or officers. The rest will be posted to various units. He will be required to comeback for annual trainings for the next 13yrs.
WEAPONS & LOCAL DEFENCE CONTRACTORS
Singapore uses mostly Arms tat come from Europe and America. This led to many, especially foreigners to conclude that the SAF totally rely on foreigners for its miltary needs. Well, u r wrong. Singapore do have local arms industry tat does R & D, manufacturing of ammunitions and the upgrading of weapon system. For example, most of the naval vessels, SAR21, BIONIX, PRIMUS-1, FH-2000, TERREX, are some of the examples of local made and designed weapons.
